At least 72 tigers have died from a deadly viral and bacterial infection at a private animal park in northern Thailand, officials say.

The provincial livestock department in Chiang Mai said in a statement on Friday that the tigers had been diagnosed with canine distemper.

Health workers also found the bacteria Mycoplasma in the tigers during checks.

The Tiger Chiang Mai Park has been temporarily closed after the tiger's death. It is a park where people can watch and take pictures of the tigers up close. That is why it used to attract large crowds of tourists.

'When tigers get sick, it is difficult to detect compared to animals like cats or dogs. By the time we realized they were sick, it was too late,' Somchuaan Ratnamungklanon, director of the National Livestock Department, told local media.

'These tigers died the way they lived - in misery, captivity and fear,' animal rights group PETA Asia told AFP.

'If tourists stayed away, these places would not become profitable so quickly, and such tragedies would be much less likely to occur,' the group added.
