More than four million Afghan refugees have returned to their homeland Afghanistan in the past year, said Abdul Muttalib Haqqani, spokesman for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation.

It is reported that 4 million 76 thousand 808 Afghan refugees have returned since the beginning of 2025. Afghan radio, television and other media outlets, citing Haqqani, have reported that the returnees include both voluntary and exiled people.

Official media outlets have reported that all those who have returned home and those temporarily staying in camps have been transferred to their home provinces after receiving essential assistance.

More than 8 million Afghan refugees have voluntarily returned home from neighboring Iran, Afghanistan and other countries since the Afghan government took power in August 2021.

The UN agency that works on refugees, UNHCR, has also reported that about 150 thousand Afghan citizens have returned home in the last two months. This figure is unprecedented compared to the previous year, 2025.
