Bangladesh National Party (BNP) Chairman Tariq Rahman has become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

President Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building in Dhaka.

The BNP parliamentary party unanimously elected him its leader this morning. The BNP had secured more than two-thirds of the votes in the election held last Thursday.

Tariq, 60, is the son of former President Ziyur Rahman and Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

The then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August 2024. Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus, who was appointed as the chief advisor to the interim government on August 8, conducted the election last Thursday.

Out of 300 direct seats, 299 were voted in. Of these, 297 seats were counted, and the BNP won 209 seats. The election was postponed due to the death of a candidate in one seat. Similarly, the court had ordered a halt to the counting of votes in two seats.
