Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran and Washington had reached an agreement on basic principles during indirect talks in Geneva.
"There has been a good development compared to the previous round. Both sides will work on a possible agreement document and exchange views. This does not mean that we will reach an agreement soon. But the path is open," he said. Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had said that the US should not dominate the talks. "If the US comes with certain conditions, then there will be no agreement," he said.
Iran closed part of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz ahead of the Geneva talks on Tuesday. Iranian state media reported that this was done for security reasons.
