The US has sharply increased its air and naval power in the Middle East ahead of indirect talks with Iran in Geneva. The US has said it is keeping the options open for both talks and military intervention with Iran.

On Tuesday, some fighter jets from a US air base in Britain were moved closer to the Middle East, CNN reported. A refueling tanker has also been moved to keep the military on alert.  According to US officials, additional air defense systems are being sent to the region. According to flight tracking data, dozens of US cargo planes have flown

over the past few weeks to Jordan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia via the US. Open-source flight data shows that more than 250 US military cargo flights have flown in the region. These flights are believed to be carrying supplies.  On Friday evening, several fighter jets had obtained diplomatic permission to enter Jordanian airspace. Satellite images show that 12 US F-15 fighter jets have been deployed to Jordan's Muwafaq Salti air base since January 25.  President Donald Trump has been threatening military action against Iran for weeks. Asked on Friday if there was a regime change in Iran, he said, “I would be happy if that happened.”  The US has also continued the talks  The first round of talks was held in Oman last week. Today, the second round of talks is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, mediated by Oman. President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to be present from the US at the talks. The Iranian team is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The protests in Iran that have been going on since December 28  seemed to have subsided for a few days. However, on Sunday, anti-government slogans were again heard in Tehran.

In late January, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress, “If the regime in Iran collapses, it’s not clear who will form a new government.” He repeated the same statement in the latest hearing.

CNN spoke to two US officials on the subject. According to the source, if the regime collapses, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps could take over, at least for a short time.

The US has deployed the Abraham Lincoln warship to the Middle East. Last Friday, Trump ordered the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald Ford, to leave the Caribbean Sea for the Middle East. It is estimated that the ship could reach the Middle East within three weeks. The US has strengthened its military presence here, realizing that military intervention is necessary if the talks fail.
