Gunmen on motorcycles have attacked three villages in northern Nigeria, killing at least 46 people.

The attacks on three villages in the Niger state of Borgu were reported by AFP news agency. The deadliest was in the village of Konkoso, where at least 38 people were shot or slit to death. Most of the houses in the village were burnt to the ground. More bodies were being recovered, Al Jazeera reported. Niger state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said gunmen attacked the village of Tungar Makeri and then headed towards Konkoso. The attacks came amid a complex security crisis in northern Nigeria, where armed groups and gangs that kidnap people for ransom are also active. Abiodun said houses were burned. Jeremiah Timothy, a resident of Konkoso, told Reuters the attackers attacked the village at around 10am local time on Saturday. They entered the village at 6pm and opened fire indiscriminately.  The Kainji Forest, which borders Niger and Kwara states, is home to the armed group Boko Haram and various bandits and fighters.

Last October, the al-Qaeda-affiliated group For the Support of Islam and Muslims attacked Nigerian territory near Boro in Kwara state.
