UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has called for a ceasefire in Sudan to allow for the expansion of aid.
Speaking at a US-hosted event in Washington to mobilize resources for the humanitarian response in Sudan, Fletcher noted that the country has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis for more than 1,000 days due to the ongoing fighting. He reiterated the UN's support for a ceasefire and stressed the need for an end to hostilities to pave the way for peace in the country.
In his address, Fletcher said that assistance to Sudan must be rapidly scaled up to prevent continued displacement and the worsening humanitarian situation. He also called for disarmament in key areas of fighting.
