China has introduced a rule that prohibits electric vehicles from having 'hidden door handles.' Car companies will have to comply with this rule from January 1, 2027.
Billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla electric car has a controversial design with a small, hidden door handle. After its popularity, a similar door handle was installed in China.
However, China took this decision keeping in mind the safety of users. Such handles have made rescue operations difficult in major accidents. Not long ago, two Xiaomi EVs in China crashed without opening their doors.
According to Chinese media, only cars with visible handles on both the inside and outside of the doors will now be allowed to be sold.
Cars that have been approved by Chinese authorities for sale can update their designs within two years.
'Hidden handles' are increasingly used in electric vehicles in China. For now, these standards will only apply to cars sold in the Chinese market. However, since many cars from China are exported to the global market, it is expected to have an impact on the rest of the world.
Tesla's door handles are being investigated by US safety regulators. Europe is also trying to make rules on this.
