Kim Geun-hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison.

The former first lady was sentenced by the Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday for accepting bribes from the controversial Unification Church, BBC reported.

Kim, 52, had received gifts worth about $56,000 from the Unification Church. The gifts she received included a Graff diamond necklace and several Chanel handbags. The court has now ordered her to return 12.85 million won.

Kim is also accused of recruiting Unification Church followers to her husband's conservative People Power Party and accepting gifts in exchange for government jobs. However, the charges are yet to be heard.  

However, the court cleared her of receiving free opinion polls from middlemen ahead of the 2022 presidential election, which her husband, Yun Suk-yeol, won.
