At least 22 people have died after a construction crane fell on a passenger train in northeastern Thailand.

According to the international media Al Jazeera,  55 other people were injured in the accident that occurred on Wednesday morning .

The accident occurred in Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 kilometers northeast of the capital Bangkok . A crane used to build a high-speed rail (high-speed rail) fell on a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani .

The train was running when the crane fell from above and hit the train, which then caught fire.  Although it was initially said that four people had died, the death toll has risen to 22 during the rescue, international media reported, citing Thai police.

According to local police, the train derailed after the crane fell. Rescue work is currently underway at the scene and officials have said that the death toll could rise further as people may be trapped in the rubble . The injured are being treated at local hospitals .
