What you should know
The United States, along with its allies, has launched a major airstrike against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
The attack was ordered by US President Donald Trump on Saturday in response to an attack by IS on US troops in Syria on December 13, Centcom said on social media. The attack was necessary to defeat terrorism and protect the US and its allies in the Middle East, Centcom said.
“Our message is clear. If you attack our fighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world,” Centcom said.
An official told US media outlet CBS News that the US and its partners carried out more than 90 strikes in more than 35 locations. More than 20 aircraft were used in the attacks, CBS News reported.
The official said that aircraft used in the attacks included F-15Es, A-10Ss, AC-130JSs, MQ-9Ss, and Jordanian F-16Ss.
Details of the number of deaths and injuries in the attack have not been made public.
Syria is currently in a period of transition since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The civil war that began in 2011 under Assad has not yet been brought under control.
Ahmed al-Sharaa has been in charge of the presidency since Assad fled to Russia last year. The IS group, which has been severely weakened in Syria, has been trying to take advantage of the transition to strengthen its presence.
