US President Donald Trump has invited Colombian President Gustavo Petro to the White House, in an attempt to mend relations between the two countries that have been strained recently, according to Colombia-based media outlet Colombia Report.

Trump said on his social media account, Truth Social, that he had spoken to Petro on the phone and that he was looking forward to meeting him.

'It was an honor to speak with Colombian President Gustavo Petro,' Trump wrote. 'He called to explain the drug dispute and other disagreements we have. I was impressed by his style of communication and conversation.'

President Petro confirmed Trump's invitation while addressing a rally in the Colombian capital, Bogota. He accused some Miami elites of having a hand in souring his relationship with Trump.

'They lied to Trump that I had my own cocaine factory and that I was a man for ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro,' Petro said. 'They lied to Trump, which led Trump to accuse me of being the main drug trafficker, which is ridiculous for any Colombian.'

According to Petro, the conversation with Trump lasted about an hour. During the conversation, he briefed Trump on his government's efforts to combat drug trafficking.

The US had recently placed Colombia on a list of countries that do not cooperate with drug trafficking, and President Petro himself was included in the 'blacklist' of drug traffickers and money launderers.

However, even after this telephone conversation and invitation, Trump has not immediately lifted the sanctions imposed on Petro, and the reduction in anti-drug aid to Colombia remains in place. It is expected that the upcoming meeting between the two leaders at the White House will decide whether or not these sanctions will be lifted.
