US President Donald Trump is discussing various options for acquiring Greenland, the White House said, adding that acquiring the semi-autonomous territory of NATO member Denmark is a national security priority for the United States.

Denmark has said it would not accept US intervention on the island. “If the US were to launch a military attack on another NATO member, the security system established after World War II would be over,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in an interview on Danish television on Monday. Shortly after, European leaders issued a joint statement in support of Denmark.

In response, the White House said on Tuesday, “The president and his team are discussing various options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, the use of US forces is always an option within the commander-in-chief.”

NATO is a trans-Atlantic military alliance. If one of the members is attacked by an outside force, all members of the alliance are united in their defense.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Monday that the government had no plans to invade Greenland. But he reiterated his intention to buy the island from Denmark.
