The US has pressured Venezuela to expel intelligence and military personnel from China, Russia, Cuba and Iran. The US has said diplomats may be allowed to remain in Venezuela.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has put pressure on Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez. Rubio made the revelation in a secret meeting with US Congressional leaders on Monday. According to those present at the meeting, Rubio called Delcy within minutes of Maduro and his wife being taken into custody by US forces on Saturday and brought aboard a US ship. Rubio also said in his conversation with Delcy that he wanted to resume oil trade between the US and Venezuela. Earlier, when Hugo Chavez's government nationalized oil industries in 1998, American companies began to withdraw from here. Now, all but Chevron have stopped producing and trading here. Venezuela may have to end the nationalization or pay compensation to get those companies back. President Trump had previously said that he would allow American companies to drill and trade oil here. He said that the US and Venezuela would jointly sell the oil extracted in this way. “They stole a lot of our oil. That’s why we’re doing business together now,” Trump said.
