The US military seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday after pursuing it in the Caribbean Sea for the past few days.

The ship, named Bella 1, was carrying oil from Venezuela to Iran, the US military claims. The ship was renamed the Marinera after Venezuela imposed sanctions on the US in 2024. The US Department of Justice and Homeland Security said they seized the ship in international waters northwest of Scotland. The tanker had been under US surveillance since it attempted to reach Venezuela in late December. The US Coast Guard tried to seize the ship, but the crew refused to let the Americans board. The ship then diverted and headed towards the Atlantic Ocean, Russian media outlet RT reported. Russia has strongly condemned the incident, saying it violates international maritime conventions. The US has also said it has seized another ship. But no information has been received about the ownership of the ship.
