The US Department of Justice says more than two million documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are still under review.

The department announced on Monday that it has extended the deadline for releasing all those files by more than two weeks.

The department began releasing documents related to the decades-long investigation into Epstein last month. But the department has already passed the deadline (December 19) set by the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

In a letter sent to a federal judge on Monday, department officials said more than two million documents are still “in various stages of review.”

The letter said only 12,285 documents have been released so far, comprising about 125,000 pages. That number is less than one percent of the documents currently under review.

The department said on December 24 that it had identified more than one million additional files that were not included in the initial review. Some of the documents appeared to be duplicates, but the letter said they still needed “processing and deduplication.”

The letter, signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi and other officials, says there is “still a lot of work to be done.” The department says more than 400 attorneys from across the department will conduct a detailed review of the documents over the next few weeks.

President Donald Trump has faced intense pressure from Democrats over his failure to release all of the Epstein files in a timely manner.
