A fire broke out at a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Eve. Official damage estimates are not yet available.

The police in the southwestern Swiss canton of Valais described the incident as "serious".

Police spokesman Gaëtan Lathion said the explosion and fire broke out at the ski resort Le Constellation at 1:30 a.m. A large number of people had gathered to celebrate the New Year in the building.

A large team of police, firefighters and rescue workers rushed to the scene and rescued many victims. Local media reported that more than 100 people were injured in the incident.

Photos published by Swiss media showed the building on fire and people screaming and running away. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been started by fireworks during a concert. Lathion said, "The operation is still ongoing and the affected area is completely closed to the public. A no-fly zone has been imposed in Crans-Montana."

A large number of ambulances were seen at the scene and authorities have set up a special helpline and reception center to support affected families.
