At least 13 people have been killed and at least 98 injured in a train accident in Mexico.
Reuters and CNN, among other international media outlets, have reported that the death toll could rise. The train, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members, derailed in the Asuncion-Ixtaltepec region of Oaxaca state, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the Mexican capital.
CNN said that 36 of the injured were taken to hospital for treatment and the others suffered minor injuries. The cause of the accident is not yet known. The Interoceanic Railway, which was involved in the accident, was inaugurated in 2023 by then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The service was launched to promote rail travel in southern Mexico.
