In the five years since the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in Portugal, more than 32 million doses have been administered.

This was revealed in figures released by the Directorate General of Public Health on Saturday.

Francisco Jorge, president of the Portuguese Public Health Society and former Director General of Health, called the achievement “very positive” and said that continuing the vaccination campaign was a “fundamental necessity”.

An analysis of the data presented by Portugal’s National Agency for Medicines and Health Products in September 2023 showed that the use of the vaccine saved around 12,000 lives in the first two years.

Meanwhile, Portugal launched a joint vaccination campaign against seasonal flu and COVID-19 this week. The campaign aims to vaccinate 2.5 million people against seasonal flu and 1.5 million against COVID-19.
