Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a money laundering case, the Kuala Lumpur High Court announced on Friday.
Najib, 72, was found guilty of four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering. Prosecutors accused Najib of misusing his position as prime minister, finance minister and chairman of the 1MDB advisory board more than a decade ago to illegally transfer 2.2 billion Malaysian ringgit ($543 million) to his personal accounts. Najib had denied the charges, which were politically motivated. Judge Colin Lawrence Sequerah denied. This is Najib's second conviction in connection with the 1MDB scandal. He was previously sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2020 for embezzling about $10 million from the fund. The sentence was later reduced to six years. Last year, Najib apologized to Malaysians for his role in the 1MDB scandal.
