Libyan army chief General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad has died in a plane crash.

Five people, including General Ali, were killed when a Falcon 50 plane crashed on Tuesday evening after taking off from the Turkish capital Ankara.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the plane's signal disappeared 42 minutes after takeoff. The plane had requested permission to make an emergency landing before losing contact. Debris was later found southwest of Ankara. The investigation is still ongoing.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dweibah said the crash had caused great damage to the country. "Libya has lost those who served the country with honesty and dedication. This is an irreparable loss," he said.

General Ali was in Turkey for talks on strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
