What you should know

The US Department of Justice on Friday released documents related to notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The documents contain scant mentions of current US President Donald Trump, while former President Bill Clinton is widely mentioned along with photos.

Despite intense pressure to open the ‘Epstein file’, the Trump administration tried to keep it secret for months. Later, the US Congress made it mandatory for it to be made public in November. Only then did President Trump allow the files to be made public.

The names or photos of famous people such as former US President Clinton, members of the British royal family, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson appear in the released files. Many people have been named in the ‘Epstein case’ before. But they have claimed that they did nothing wrong with Epstein.

The fact that Trump’s name almost does not appear in the documents and that many old photos of Clinton are included has become the center of political controversy. In the public documents, Clinton can be seen enjoying herself in a swimming pool and hot tub with Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, while the faces of some of the people in the documents have been ‘blacked out’.

Clinton has previously expressed regret for her association with Epstein. She has claimed to have no knowledge of Epstein's crimes. Trump and Epstein were close friends in the 1990s and 2000s, but their relationship deteriorated after Epstein's first conviction in 2008. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has denied any knowledge of Epstein's crimes. The documents do not show Trump's involvement.

The public documents also include a 1996 complaint filed by Maria Farmer with the FBI alleging that Epstein had provided child pornography. Farmer said the FBI did not follow up on her complaint. Public photos show celebrities such as journalist Walter Cronkite, singer Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, entrepreneur Richard Branson and Sarah Ferguson. But no charges have been filed against any of these individuals for any criminal activity linked to Epstein.

The Justice Department has been “highlighting” photos of Clinton on social media, which Clinton spokesman Angel Urena accused of trying to divert attention from the Trump administration. Trump last month ordered the Justice Department to investigate Clinton’s relationship with Epstein. The partial release of the “Epstein file” has come under widespread criticism.

Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Representative Thomas Massie have said the redacted release of thousands of pages of the file violates the spirit of the law. The Justice Department has said hundreds of thousands of additional pages are still under review and will be released soon.

Only 44 percent of Republican voters are satisfied with Trump’s handling of the Epstein case, far below his overall 82 percent approval rating. The case has been analyzed as damaging to Trump’s political standing ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Epstein's 'inappropriate' close relationships with powerful people and his alleged 'suicide' in prison in 2019 have long been viewed with great interest and suspicion, as the 'Epstein file' has been viewed with great interest and suspicion. He is accused of operating luxurious resorts around the Caribbean and taking young girls there to serve wealthy people.

The girls have complained of sexual abuse in this process. Britain's Prince Andrew has decided to leave the royal palace after a controversy over his relationship with Epstein. Many such high-profile people, politicians and businessmen have been linked to this case. In the past, there have been allegations that Trump also had a relationship with Epstein.

Earlier, Trump's name was also mentioned in Epstein's 'leaked' emails. Epstein also used Trump's name when talking to third parties. But the Epstein files released on Friday do not appear to contain any documents that would establish a direct connection between Trump and Epstein.

The BBC also reported that Trump's name and photo have not yet appeared in the newly released files. The Justice Department said it was withholding some material, citing the privacy of victims and an active investigation.
