Seven elephants died on the spot after a passenger train crashed into a herd of elephants in northeastern India, officials said Saturday.

No passengers were injured in the accident in Hojai district of Assam state, home to more than 4,000 of India's estimated 22,000 wild elephants.

Seven elephants died on the spot and one was injured, AFP quoted senior Assam police officer Rakesh Reddy as saying.

Five coaches of the train, which was travelling from Mizoram state to New Delhi, were derailed in the accident.

Officials have implemented speed control systems in designated elephant corridors, but the latest accident occurred outside these areas, Indian Railways spokesman Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said.

The train driver applied the emergency brakes after spotting the herd of elephants, but the accident occurred when the elephants came crashing into the train, he said.

Deforestation and construction activities near their habitats have forced elephants to travel far and wide for food, leading to conflicts with humans.

According to parliamentary data, 629 people died in elephant attacks in India in 2023-2024.
