The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that it will provide Sri Lanka with approximately $206 million in emergency assistance.

The IMF Executive Board meeting held on Friday decided to provide this assistance to address the problems and difficulties arising from the devastating cyclone 'Ditwa'. Cyclone Ditwa, which hit Sri Lanka on November 17, has caused huge loss of life and property. The death toll here has reached 643, while 183 people are still missing.

IMF Deputy Managing Director Kenji Okamura said in a statement,

“This disaster has created a huge need for immediate humanitarian assistance and reconstruction, which has deepened the government’s fiscal pressure and balance of payments problems. To address this,  financial assistance has been provided under the IMF’s RFI (Rapid Financing Instrument).

He added, “All emergency expenditures will be implemented in accordance with the Public Finance Management Act and will be monitored in accordance with strong transparency and accountability standards. Regular public reporting to support this will be introduced.”

Okamura praised the Sri Lankan government for its prompt response to the emergency. He said the IMF stands with the Sri Lankan people and will continue to support the country’s reconstruction and economic recovery efforts.

Similarly, the Sri Lankan parliament has approved a supplementary budget of US$ 1.64 billion to restore the livelihoods of cyclone-affected citizens across the country.
