Police have filed 59 charges against a man arrested for opening fire at a Jewish community Hanukkah event on Sydney's Bondi Beach.

The New South Wales Police have registered 15 charges of murder against him. 40 charges of grievous bodily harm with intent to murder have also been registered. He has also been charged with committing a terrorist act, firing a weapon, possessing explosives and publicly displaying the symbol of a terrorist organisation.

The shooting took place on the first night of the Hanukkah festival on December 14. 16 people, including the attacker, were killed.

CCTV footage shows father and son Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram opening fire. Sajid, 50, was shot dead by police at the scene.

His son Naveed was arrested by police and taken to hospital. He is currently receiving treatment. Police said he will only be interviewed after treatment. The court proceedings have been postponed until April.

This incident is the worst mass shooting in Australia since 1996.
