A Pakistani military court has sentenced the former head of Pakistan's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency to 14 years in prison on charges including violating state secrets and abuse of authority, the army said on Thursday.

Faiz Hamid, who served under jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been convicted of wrongful death by engaging in political activities, the army said in a statement. According to a Supreme Court document published in 2023, Faiz Hamid has been accused of abuse of power and raiding private businesses.

The intelligence chief is considered the second most powerful position in the Pakistani army. After a lengthy legal battle, the court convicted the accused on all charges and sentenced him to 14 years in prison, the statement said. According to experts, Faiz Hamid was a staunch supporter of Imran Khan, who was removed by a no-confidence vote after losing the support of some top leaders.

General Faiz Hamid, who was a contender for the prestigious post of army chief, reportedly took early retirement a few months after Khan lost power. He was also accused of violating the Pakistan Army Act shortly after.
