At least 30 people were injured in a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck northeastern Japan on Saturday night.

Thousands of people have been displaced by the earthquake.

The earthquake struck at 11:15 p.m. local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Its epicenter was about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori prefecture and at a depth of 50 kilometers.

A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, but that warning has now been lifted. However, waves of up to 70 centimeters high were seen on the coast. Some train services were suspended and thousands of homes lost power.

According to local media, authorities have warned that more powerful earthquakes could occur in the coming days. As a result, people have been asked to be on high alert for at least a week.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, "Re-evaluate your preparations for the earthquake. If you feel the tremors, be prepared to leave your homes immediately." According to news agency Reuters, about 90,000 people have been instructed to leave their homes.
