A powerful earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Monday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:15 p.m. local time, international media reported.

International media Al Jazeera quoted the agency as saying that the earthquake was centered off the coast of Aomori and Hokkaido . After the earthquake, the agency warned that a tsunami of up to three meters high could hit the country's northeastern coastal area. The agency issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures. So far, there has been no information about human casualties or material damage.
