Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy for Russia-Ukraine talks, is scheduled to meet with the head of Ukraine's National Security Council, Rustam Umarov, in Miami. Earlier on Tuesday, Witkoff held five hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, but no solution was reached.

The US has been holding separate talks with Russia and Ukraine to end the war that has been going on since 2022.  In the talks, leaders from both sides of Russia and Ukraine have said they are committed to establishing peace, but they have not been able to put it into practice.

The latest discussions are focused on the peace proposal put forward by the US and the amendments made to it.

Russia had accepted the initial 28-point proposal put forward by the US some time ago. But last week, a Geneva meeting involving Ukraine and European countries amended it. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been objecting to some of the amended points. That is why the 5-hour-long talks with Witkoff on Tuesday failed to make a 'breakthrough'.

Russia has been demanding that the territory it captured during the war remain with itself. It also demands that Ukraine express a commitment not to become a NATO member.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is demanding that Russia return the territories it has forcibly occupied. Similarly, they are demanding that Russia guarantee that it will not attack Ukraine in the future.
