The US government's agency to increase government efficiency (DoD), which was launched under the leadership of the world's richest man Elon Musk with great fanfare shortly after Donald Trump was elected president for a second term in early 2025, has been shut down, officials have said.

The agency, which was set to run until July 2026, has been dormant since Musk left the White House at the end of May. In an interview with Reuters, Scott Cooper, the director of personnel management, said that the agency “is no longer there.”
The agency had announced an ambitious plan to save the US government about $2 trillion. Trump and Musk's plan was a victim of controversy and criticism from the beginning. Musk, who appeared in front of the media with a saw in his hand with an aggressive plan to save 30 percent of the government budget, had laid off about 50,000 employees in 30 US government agencies through his agency.
Musk also closed the US Agency for International Development (USAID) completely, including some services related to consumers and health. Last February, the agency's budget claim was reduced to $1 trillion, but later revised to below $2 trillion.
'It's not as centralized as it used to be,' Cooper said. 'Some of the agency's officials have taken on other responsibilities in other government agencies.' An official who worked on Musk's team at Dodge is now responsible for redesigning government websites. Another official has been appointed chief technology officer at the Department of Health.
Musk has not made any public comments about Dodge since leaving the government.
