At least 10 people have been killed in a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and surrounding areas on Friday.

Hundreds of civilians were injured in the earthquake, officials said. The quake struck at 10:38 a.m. local time in the Ghorsal area of Narsingdi district, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Dhaka. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was about 10 kilometers (6 miles) underground. The Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star said 10 people had been killed in the quake so far. The Daily Star reported that several people were killed when roofs and walls of buildings collapsed in Dhaka, and that a pedestrian was crushed under the structures when the railings of buildings collapsed. The USGS said the northern and southeastern parts of Bangladesh are considered seismically active due to the continuous interaction between the Indian and Eurasian plates. But the central part of the country is in a relatively less active zone, so this time the tremor was experienced more unexpectedly.

According to Bangladeshi officials, rescue and damage assessment operations are continuing. Citizens across the country have been urged to remain vigilant and be aware of possible aftershocks.
