At least 10 people have been killed and 18 others missing after a landslide hit a residential area in Indonesia's Central Java province, officials said Friday.

According to the disaster mitigation agency BNPB, the casualties were caused by a landslide that occurred in Pandanarum village in Pandanarum district after heavy rains.

Seven bodies have been recovered so far, bringing the death toll to 10, said BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari.

Muhari said the disaster was caused by prolonged rains and cracks in the mountains that had weakened the soil layers. The search and rescue operation was continuing in challenging conditions.

According to local authorities, 195 people were affected by the landslide, which damaged 48 houses, while 934 residents have been moved to safer temporary shelters, according to the latest BNPB update.

More than 700 personnel from various agencies, including the national search and rescue agency Basarnas, the army, police, local disaster management units and volunteers, have been deployed to the area.

Search efforts have been divided into three zones, with heavy machinery, search and rescue dog units and equipment being used to clear waterlogged areas.
