Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur is the youngest legislator in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Thakur became the youngest MP in India by winning the Alinagar Assembly seat in Bihar's Darbhanga district.

Thakur, who contested from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), got 84,915 votes. Her rival, Binod Mishra of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), got 73,185 votes. She had entered politics through the Bharatiya Janata Party just a few months before the elections. Thakur graduated from Delhi University and is a talented singer in the music field.

Thakur, who has also won awards like the Ustad Bismillah Khan Youth Award and the National Creator Award, is currently in the news everywhere. She joined the BJP on August 13. But within three months of her entry into politics, she made an impressive leap and created history as the youngest legislator in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. She was inducted into the party by Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal.

Who is Maithili Thakur?

Maithili Thakur was born on 25 July 2000 in Madhubani district of Bihar. Her father Ramesh Thakur is a music teacher by profession. Mother Pooja Thakur is a housewife. Her father came to Delhi with his family in search of a good job and a bright future. Maithili's studies and musical journey also progressed in Delhi. She has two brothers, Rishabh and Ayachi Thakur. They are also active in music.

Maithili received her initial education in her village. After coming to Delhi, she completed her studies up to 12th at Bal Bhawan International School. Later, she graduated from Atmaram Sanatan Dharma College, University of Delhi. Maithili, who pursued music and formal education simultaneously, excelled in both fields due to hard work and dedication.

Both her father and grandfather are musicians. That is why she was close to music from her childhood. Her home became the first school of classical music. At a very young age, she managed to master Indian classical music and Maithili folk music. The classical songs she sang have been going viral on social media for the past few years.

Musical journey

Her musical journey was not easy. She also participated in big reality shows like ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs’ and ‘Indian Idol Junior’. But in the beginning, she had to face rejection. 8 years ago in 2017, she became the 'first runner-up' in 'The Rising Star'. After that, her bhajans and folk songs started going viral on social media. She has millions of followers on her YouTube channel and Instagram. Today, her melodious voice reaches the ears of millions.

In recognition of her contribution to the music sector, the Bihar government also made her the brand ambassador of the State Food and Village Industries Board in 2024. Earlier, she was also honored with the prestigious 'Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar' by the Sangeet Natak Academy. Receiving this award is considered a great achievement for young artists. Only last year, she was honored with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi National Creator Award.

Her fans call her 'Junior Bihar Kokila'. Her singing is sweet, her folk songs deep and her voice simple. She sings in many languages ​​including Hindi, Bhojpuri, Maithili.

Not only within the country, she has also performed classical and folk songs abroad. According to Indian media, she is paid between 5 and 7 lakh Indian rupees for a show.

Her traditional and devotional songs have made her popular among the audience in India and abroad. Her videos are viewed millions of times and she also performs internationally.

She is equally popular among the Terai-Madhesh region of Nepal, especially the Mithila region, due to her folk songs in the Maithili language. She also visited the Janaki Temple in 2023.

Before entering politics, she was also made the 'State Icon' of Bihar by the Election Commission of India. Maithili sang the song 'Kisi Roz' in the 2024 film 'Auro Mein Kahan Dum Tha' starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu.

Maithili has emotionally thanked the voters after her victory in the Bihar Assembly. She said, 'Today, I am standing as your daughter rather than your representative because of your immense love, trust and blessings. This victory is not only mine, this victory belongs to Alinagar.
