According to the initial counting of votes in the Bihar assembly elections, the NDA alliance is leading in more than 180 seats. Among the alliance's components, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 83 seats, the Janata Dal United (JDU) in 79, and the Lok Janshakti Party of Ram Vilas is leading in 22 seats.
The grand alliance has taken a lead of 49 seats. The main components of this alliance are the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) in 32 seats, the Congress in 6 seats and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) in 6 seats.
The counting of votes was held at 8 am local time. A total of 243 seats were contested in two phases on 6 and 11 November.
The Election Commission of India has said that 66.91 percent of the votes were cast in the election. This is the first time that such a high number of votes have been cast in any election held in the state of Bihar since India's independence.
More women voted in the election than men. Of the total votes, 71.6 percent were women and 62.8 percent were men.
