The longest shutdown in history is set to end within days after the US Senate passed a budget bill on Monday night by a 60-40 vote.

The bill passed by the Senate will now go to the lower house (House). The President will sign it after it is passed by a majority. Earlier on Monday, Republican Senate Leader John Thune said he was hopeful that the shutdown would end within a week. Similarly, President Donald Trump said he was eager to sign it as soon as it is passed by the House.

Eight Democratic lawmakers joined Republican lawmakers in passing the budget needed to run the government. The longest shutdown in US history has entered its 42nd day.

Many services under the federal government are affected due to the lack of necessary spending to run the government.

What are the effects of the shutdown?

The ‘shutdown’ has affected all functions of the federal government. Nearly 1.4 million federal employees have not been able to get paid. Important services such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Infant, Child and Women’s Nutrition Program were affected. The food stamp program, which benefits nearly 42 million Americans, has been hit in many places due to the government's failure to make payments. The Supreme Court has ordered the program to be temporarily shut down. In some places, its service has slowed down. National parks are closed due to lack of proper management. And, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reduced flights due to problems with air controllers.

The shutdown has slowed GDP growth. It is also difficult for experts to estimate the damage as economic data reporting has been affected.

Federal grants to state and local governments have been cut. Due to the disruption to public life, revenue collections have also decreased. As a result, local services and budgets have also been affected. Soldiers are working, but their salaries are also being delayed.

Concerns have been expressed that the economic stress could weaken the morale of active soldiers and reserve forces. The federal government has halted support and loans to small businesses. The overall economic impact is spreading across the country.
