The US Senate voted 60 to 40 to end the shutdown. The vote came shortly after eight Democratic lawmakers reached an agreement with Republican leaders to allow the government to reopen the shutdown.

This is seen as the first step towards ending the long-running shutdown. There has been an agreement to end the shutdown immediately and to hold separate votes on health insurance subsidies and other issues under the Affordable Care Act. The shutdown that has been ongoing in the US for the past 40 days has had an impact across the country. Before the vote, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that air travel would be cut significantly before Thanksgiving. Similarly, the Department of Agriculture had instructed states not to issue ‘foot stamp benefits’ after a court order.

Once the Senate has 60 votes to remove the filibuster on the economic bill, only a majority is needed in the remaining voting process. However, there are still some steps left to end the shutdown. For this, the economic bill will have to be sent to the lower house (House) and from there to the president.

All government services in the US have been shut down for the past 40 days, except for emergencies. Nearly 1.4 million federal employees have not been able to receive their salaries during this period.
