A powerful storm that hit Brazil has killed at least five people and injured 130 others in the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu in the southern state of Paraná.

Cars were overturned and houses were damaged in the city, the Paraná Civil Defense said in a statement. “Initial reports indicate that 30 people were seriously injured and about 100 were slightly injured,” the statement said.

According to government officials, winds of 180 to 250 kilometers per hour hit the city of 14,000 people. Trees were also downed.

Paraná state Governor Ratinho Junior wrote on social media, “Security forces are on alert. They are monitoring and rescuing the city from the impact of the storm.” Meteorological officials said residents in the southern states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Ria Grande do Sul had been warned of the potential danger posed by the storm.
