Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will not run for reelection.
She served as Speaker of the House from 2019 to 2023. Pelosi, a Democrat and one of the most influential figures in American politics, represented San Francisco in the House of Representatives for nearly 40 years.
Pelosi, 85, announced in a video message to voters on Thursday that she would not seek re-election. She said this would be her last term as a lawmaker.
“I have a message for my beloved city of San Francisco: Know your power,” she said. “We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led in this way.”
She said, “We need to continue to participate fully in democracy and express our ideas.” Former President Barack Obama has called Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker of the House one of the best in American history.
