Typhoon Kalmayagi, one of the deadliest storms of the year, has killed at least three people in Vietnam and affected tens of thousands more. The storm made landfall in central Vietnam on Thursday with winds of up to 149 kilometers per hour (93 miles per hour).

Vietnam had made necessary preparations in view of the possible threat of the typhoon. It has mobilized about 260,000 soldiers, 6,700 vehicles and 6 aircraft for rescue and relief.

The storm has had the greatest impact on Dak Lak province. This province is 350 kilometers away from the capital Ho Chi Minh City. Work is underway to evacuate the affected people from here to safer places by plane and expressway.

This typhoon had caused devastation in the Philippines a few days ago.  The death toll from the typhoon and floods has reached 114 there. Similarly, 120 people are still missing. A large number of houses have been damaged here.  The typhoon has moved from Vietnam to Laos through western Cambodia.
