A cargo plane crashed in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, on Wednesday, killing seven people and injuring 11 others.
According to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), UPS Flight 2976 was flying from Muhammad Ali International Airport to Daniel Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii.
According to the FAA, the crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time. Smoke and fire were seen in the southern part of the airport after the crash. Videos shared on social media showed intense flames and burning debris.
Police have instructed people living within 5 miles (8 km) of the airport to stay indoors. The airport is now closed. Agencies say the crash occurred minutes after takeoff.
Louisville police said the fire was long-lasting. Initial investigations indicate that the fire was caused by a lithium battery on board. UPS said there were three crew members on board.
Media reports claim the plane was carrying about 25,000 gallons (95,000 liters) of jet fuel. Due to which the fire is said to have spread quickly and intensively.
The airport where the accident occurred is the main hub of the UPS company. Where more than 12,000 employees handle 2 million parcels daily. After the accident at the airport spread over 5 million square feet, the police and fire brigade teams immediately started extinguishing the fire.
