Police have arrested Major General Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi, the former top legal officer in the Israeli army. His disappearance on Sunday sparked political unrest in Israel.
Police said he was arrested on a beach north of Tel Aviv after an hours-long search. He is safe, police said. He is being held for further questioning.
A criminal investigation was opened in Israel last week, more than a year after a video of the Israeli army's brutal repression of Palestinian prisoners was released. Similarly, General Tomer was placed on leave while the investigation began.
On Friday, Defense Minister Israel Katz said he would not be allowed to return to his post. General Tomer then resigned. In her resignation letter, she stated that she would take moral responsibility for any material that reached the media on behalf of the military unit.
Far-right politicians and their supporters have been constantly criticizing Tomer for playing a role in leaking the video.
This video footage, broadcast by an Israeli news channel in August 2024, clearly shows the abuse of a Palestinian prisoner at a military base in southern Israel.
The hostages, who were black-robed, were brutally beaten and attacked with sharp objects by soldiers. The hostages were later seriously injured.
