The death toll from severe flooding in central Vietnam has reached 13. As water levels began to recede on Friday, residents of Hoi An have begun cleaning up.

According to the government disaster agency, at least 11 people are missing and 116,000 homes have been affected. Similarly, the floods have destroyed crops planted on 5,000 hectares of land.

Road and railway infrastructure have been damaged and power has been cut off in many places. The central region has been continuously raining for the past few days. This has caused great damage to the historic cities of Huy and Hoi An, which are listed as heritage sites by UNESCO. Photos and videos of heavy flooding in these areas are going viral on social media. Some houses are seen with water reaching the roofs.

Many tourists have canceled bookings in Hoi An after the floods. The historic city received more than 4.4 million tourists last year, of which 3.6 million were foreign tourists. The water level in an ancient settlement preserved here has been decreasing since Friday.

The city, now a tourist destination, was a busy trading post in Southeast Asia from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
