At least 132 people have been killed in a massive police crackdown on drugs in Rio de Janeiro, international news outlets have reported. The New York Times and CNN reported this information, citing the regional public defender's office in Rio de Janeiro.
The office said four police officers were among the dead. Rio de Janeiro state governor Claudio Castro confirmed the death toll at a news conference on Tuesday. “The number is certain to rise,” he said.
Dozens of bodies were left on the streets of the favela area to help families identify the dead.
Police said they seized a large quantity of drugs during the operation. Officials said at least 42 rifles were also seized. Governor Castro said it was the largest police operation in Rio de Janeiro’s history.
The city is hosting the C-40 World Mayors Summit next week. The United Nations Human Rights Office has criticized the police action. The United Nations has described the incident as “appalling.”
