A US Navy helicopter and fighter jet have crashed in the South China Sea, half an hour apart during a routine mission.
All crew members were safely evacuated. The US Navy said it has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. It is considered suspicious because the accident occurred in strategic waters with China.
The US Navy wrote in a post on social media that an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter crashed at around 2:45 pm local time on Sunday. Emergency crews safely rescued the three crew members on board the helicopter.
An F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet also crashed half an hour later. The two crew members on board were also safely rescued, CNN reported, citing the US Navy.
The fighter jet is the fourth of the US$60 million fighter jets it has lost this year.
Several governments have claimed parts of the South China Sea, which is surrounded by China and other Southeast Asian countries.
