Murder accused sentenced to death in US after 30 years

What you should know

A man accused of murdering four members of the same family in the United States has been sentenced to death after 30 years.

Richard Kenneth Zurff, 55, was sentenced to death on October 17, 2025, for the murder of four members of the same family on September 14, 1993, in Phoenix, Arizona.

Richard brutally murdered Albert Luna Sr. and Patricia Luna, their 18-year-old daughter Rachel Luna, and their 5-year-old son Damian Luna in their home.

He was executed by lethal injection, the American news agency AP reported. After Richard was arrested after the incident, the case dragged on for 30 years because he did not plead guilty to the charges against him. After he pleaded guilty, the court sentenced him to death based on the evidence.

“We have been demanding the death penalty in court because we believe that those four innocent victims deserve justice,” said Arizona Attorney General Chris Mayes. Arizona Attorney General Chris Mayes said that the four innocent victims have received full justice even after three decades.

Richard told the court that he was seeking revenge against Albert Luna Jr. for stealing electronics and guns from his apartment. The AP reported that he killed all four of them on September 14, 1993, the same day he entered the Luna family's home under the pretext of delivering flowers.

Richard raped and slit the throat of the Lunas' 18-year-old daughter, Rachel Luna. He killed Albert Luna Sr. with an aluminum bat, stabbed him, and shot him.

Albert's wives Patricia and Damian Luna were tied to chairs and shot to death, according to the indictment. Two people have been executed in Arizona this year along with Richard.

Two weeks ago, an Indian-American man was acquitted after serving 43 years in prison in the United States. A US court has acquitted Indian-origin Subramaniam Vedam 'Subu', who spent 43 years in prison for the murder of his roommate.

Vedam was arrested in 1980 for the murder of 19-year-old Thomas Kinsher, a roommate and classmate in Ruler Center County, Pennsylvania.
