Indian newspaper The Hindu reported that at least 36 people were killed and around 50 injured in a stampede at a meeting organized by actor and politician Vijay in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday. According to Indian media, 8 of them are children and 16 are women.

A large crowd gathered in the meeting organized during the statewide tour of Vijay's political party Tamilag Vetri Kazhagam. The accident happened when there was a stampede at a place where a crowd of thousands had gathered.

Vijay is campaigning in preparation for the state elections to be held early next year.

The Hindu has mentioned that at least 44 doctors have been dispatched from nearby Tiruchirappalli and Salem districts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the said unfortunate incident is very sad. Prime Minister Modi has written on the social network X (formerly Twitter), 'This tragic incident that happened during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu is very painful. I express my condolences to the family who lost their loved one in this incident. I wish them mental strength during this difficult time. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.'
