In 2019, the BJP-led government abolished the provision of the Indian Constitution that recognized Jammu and Kashmir as a special state and turned it into a Union Territory, i.e., a province governed by the Centre. The Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution has provided various special rights to areas like Ladakh, which are mainly inhabited by tribal communities, as a special autonomous state.
Wangchuk started his fast to death in Leh on September 10 . He demanded the inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule, recognition of the state and environment protection. However, after the violent clashes on September 24, he broke his fast.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had announced a lamp-lighting program at Jantar-Mantar at 7 pm on Friday against Wangchuk's arrest. Speaking about the Gen-G rebellion, Wangchuk responded that the youth in South Asian countries are becoming aware and the latest example is that the Gen-G group of Nepal overthrew the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's government.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the arrest of Wangchuk is sad. Earlier, under Article 370 of the Constitution of India, Ladakh, which was a part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, was divided into two parts by the BJP government and Ladakh was arranged to be under the central government. Currently, the lieutenant governor leads the government there, while various tasks are done under the authority of the central government.
