What you should know

Immigrants living or entering the United States illegally will be sentenced to 10 years in prison if they re-enter after being deported.

With the bill named 'Stop Illegal Entry Act' passed by the US House of Representatives last Thursday, immigrants who have illegally resided, entered, or been deported on the grounds of involvement in criminal activities in the US will face 10 years to life imprisonment if they re-enter.

In the House of Representatives, 226 MPs voted in favor and 197 voted against in the election to pass the bill named 'Stop Illegal Entry Act' submitted under the leadership of Republican MP Stephanie Bice. All MPs who voted against were Democrats. With the majority of MPs voting in favor of the bill, the twenty-two-led bill was passed.

Republican lawmakers have also strongly criticized the Democrats who voted against the bill. Republican Rep. Tom Emmer accused Democrats of still being guided by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. He noted that by voting against general penalties for people who enter the US illegally, they have not learned anything since the November election. With the passage of the

bill, the re-entry of those who are in the US illegally or who have been deported after engaging in criminal activities will be enforced more strictly. To strengthen this bill, Republican Senator Ted Cruz has submitted another bill in the US Senate. It is claimed that the bill would increase the penalties for immigrants who enter or re-enter the US illegally.

According to Pew Research Center data, there are 15.8 million (15.8 million) illegal immigrants by January 2025. After the election of President Donald Trump, the deportation of illegal immigrants has been made more strict. It seems that the number of immigrants entering the US illegally has decreased since January 2025 after tightening border security and immigration screening. The Trump administration has already allocated 74 billion US dollars to control and expel illegal immigrants.
