A Peruvian court has sentenced former president Alejandro Toledo to 13 years and 4 months in prison on charges of money laundering. Al Jazeera has reported that he has been sentenced to prison for widespread corruption.

Also in October 2024, he was convicted and sentenced to 20 years and 6 months in prison for accepting a bribe of 35 million dollars from Brazilian giant Odebrecht in return for awarding a public construction contract. Now he will have to serve both sentences simultaneously.

Toledo, who was president from 2001 to 2006, has been convicted of using bribe money from Odebrecht to kill real estate. According to prosecutors, Toledo and his wife used the $5.1 million to buy an upscale home and office near Lima and pay off mortgages on two other properties. Al Jazeera's report mentions that Toledo is trying to do 'money laundering' illegally.

Toledo, a 79-year-old economist with a degree from Stanford University and San Francisco University, is serving his sentence in the prison of the Lima Police Base. Former President Martin Vizcarra, who was jailed last month for taking bribes when he was governor of the Moquegua region 11 years ago, was released by the Peruvian High Court on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera. Vizkara's prosecution had sought a 15-year sentence. After being found innocent, he said that he plans to run for the presidency again in 2026.
