At least 610 people were killed in an earthquake of magnitude 6 in Afghanistan on Sunday night, the Taliban government said. More than 1,300 have been injured.

The Ministry of Interior of the Taliban government has informed that the death toll from the earthquake in the eastern region of Afghanistan has reached 610.

An earthquake occurred in Afghanistan's Nangarhar and Kunar provinces on Sunday night at 11:47 local time. The depth of the earthquake was 8 km.

The international media have mentioned that there has been a lot of damage due to the continuous powerful aftershocks after the first earthquake.

According to news agency AFP, the tremors of the earthquake were felt as far as the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, and the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad.

Kunar is said to have suffered the most damage. About 90 percent of the land here is mountainous. It is said that the road leading to the earthquake-affected area is very narrow and blocked due to several landslides.

According to Taliban officials, they have limited resources and have appealed to the international community for help.
